Michigan lawmakers urge Secretary Noem to retain federal jobs and FPS MegaCenter in Battle Creek
LANSING, Mich. — A bipartisan group of Michigan lawmakers led by Rep. Steve Frisbie today sent a letter to U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem urging the federal government to retain the Federal Protective Service (FPS) MegaCenter and its associated jobs in Battle Creek.
The letter expresses concern over the General Services Administration’s evaluation of the Hart-Doyle Inouye Federal Center, which currently houses the FPS MegaCenter. Lawmakers emphasized the importance of keeping the MegaCenter’s mission and workforce in Battle Creek, citing the facility’s role in national security, emergency response coordination, and regional economic stability
“The FPS MegaCenter and its dedicated workforce are deeply rooted in the Battle Creek community and play a critical role in supporting federal operations nationwide,” the lawmakers wrote. “Moving these resources out of Michigan would weaken both regional readiness and mission continuity.”
The letter outlines multiple reasons Battle Creek remains an ideal location for the MegaCenter, including its proximity to the 110th Wing of the Air National Guard, Fort Custer Training Center, a city-owned airport with a 10,003-foot runway, and nearby U.S. military reserve and logistics facilities. Lawmakers also noted Battle Creek’s central geographic location and existing infrastructure supporting DHS and federal operations.
While acknowledging the potential need to address long-term facility concerns, the lawmakers urged DHS and GSA to pursue solutions that keep the MegaCenter and its workforce in Battle Creek, including relocation to a nearby suitable facility or significant reinvestment in the current site.
“Keeping this mission in Battle Creek protects jobs, strengthens homeland security, and preserves a proven operational hub,” said Rep. Steve Frisbie. “Michigan stands ready to work with federal partners to ensure this critical function remains where it belongs.”
The letter was signed by members of the Michigan House and Senate representing communities across the state.
