Earlier this month, I was honored to lead the Michigan House of Representatives in declaring March 2025 as Women’s History Month in the State of Michigan.
As women, we have come a long way in the history of our state, and the history of our country.
When I think of Michigan women, I think of State Senator Eva McCall Hamilton, the first female state legislator who took office in 1921. I think of State Representative Cora Reynolds Anderson, the first woman sworn into our chamber, who took office in 1925. Since these two women made history, over 200 women have served as state legislators in our state, and I am honored to be among them.
It’s important we cherish and celebrate the legacies of women who have come before us as we prepare the women of the future for greatness. Athletes, civil rights leaders, public servants, and businesswomen all continue to make their mark on our state’s history each and every day.
When I think of strong women, I’m reminded of my mother, a developer and a businesswoman. I think of my four sisters: A U.S. Army Airborne Officer, a Human Rights Attorney, a mechanical engineer, and a policy writer for an international bank. The strong women in my family inspire me every day as your elected official in Lansing, and they motivate me to continue advocating for women, and to inspire our future female leaders.
As Women’s History Month comes to a close, I hope we can all reflect on the brave women of history, and the inspirational women of today. Women’s history month may only be one month long, but it’s important we remember that women are making history 365 days a year.
As your State Representative, I am honored to serve you, and it is my pleasure to wish you a Happy Women’s History Month. I will always stand with the women of our district and fight to protect the women of Michigan.
